The Stuff of Life: Balancing the Good With the Bad

I’ve written before about how I write Morning Pages and how the act of writing out what I am thankful for has made a huge difference to my wellbeing. You know, sometimes you just wake up in a funk. My husband calls it waking up ‘with a bag on’ – meaning you feel like you’ve got a bag over your head. A little cryptic, but I think it describes how I sometimes feel.

On those days, this is when I benefit most from writing out my Morning Pages, but in particular, writing down the three things that I am thankful for. How to Learn Resilience If You’re A Grown Up

DSC_0236Resilience is a real buzz word at the moment, and for good reason. We all want our children to be resilient adults, so they need to learn how to be resilient while they’re growing up. It’s a tough one – we’re all doing the best we can, but some kids are just more resilient than others.

Personally, I have two kids on opposite ends of the resilience scale. One is very resilient, takes things on the chin, moves on. Another one of my children is what I’d describe as a highly sensitive child and this can be seen in how resilient she is. She’s learning, and I’m trying to guide her, but what if the grown up guiding the child is still learning how to be resilient?  [Read more…]

From One Mother to Another – Why I Support the St Kilda Mums Mothers Day Campaign

Mothers Day is just round the corner. For many of us this represents breakfast in bed, lovely (or interesting) gifts, cute attempts by our kids to pamper us and make our day special.

For many Mums it is painful recognition of the absence of all these things. Some Mums (many Mums, actually) have a long term lease on Struggle Street. Often it’s not their fault. Often it’s through domestic violence, mental health issues or drug dependencies.

St Kilda Mums is a Melbourne-based volunteer-run organisation that re-homes used baby goods and nursery equipment. Donating goods to families in need. They have relationships with Maternal and Child Health Nurses and local social services agencies. In anticipation of Mothers Day they run a campaign called ‘One Mother to Another’ where people can donate packages to other Mums who are not as fortunate. Never before have we lived such comfortable and affluent lives. Australia has the third highest average wealth in the world, behind Switzerland and Norway.  We make up 0.36% of the world’s adult population but account for 3.78% of the world’s top 1% of wealthiest people. (source)

But this comes at a cost, on many levels. The African proverb ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ still remains, yet the village has gone. Everyone is out working, or taking their kids to gymnastics, swimming, athletics, scouts, karate, football, cricket. Or volunteering in the class room, on the sports pitch or up at the school. Or preparing for dinner guests, kids parties family get togethers…it never ends.

There’s no doubt we have very full lives. Often too full. So full, in fact that many of us feel that our day to day lives have become an avalanche of events and we are like a pack of hounds chasing our tails in a frenzy of FOMO confusion.
